The bane of my existence

You can ask anyone who knows me well if I really like technology and the resounding answer would probably be "of course", but at times it annoys the hell out of me. I seem to have random "bursts" of computer issues. The last of these was in about '01 when I had 3 consecutive western digital drives fail on me in 1 month.

I guess I was due for another round this year: Last week my PowerBook died. I'll admit I was multitasking pretty hardcore at the time, but it just froze and died. After restarting, I got the folder with a "?" logo on it. Sigh. 3 hrs later, and a trip to the Genius Bar at Costa Mesa Apple Store, my PowerBook was turned in for a new HD under warranty.

My backup Sawtooth machine ended up being my main machine for the last week. As i've mentioned before, its a blazingly fast 400mhz. Sigh.

As if that wasn't enough computer drama for the week, Krisdee's Vaio Laptop overheated and powered off (no detectable thermal damage as far as we can tell), One of the drives in the Sawtooth died (an ibm nonetheless), and my XM radio went on the fritz and died as well.

So after 1 week of reinstalling, formatting, various arguments with customer service technicians, and overall reorganization of my home network, 1 new laptop hard drive later, 1 new XM radio unit later, everything is (finally) back to normal.

"cool"
I should be good for a few more years....

Here's our new network setup for those interested:
G4 Powerbook: Work Machine
G4 450mhz Dual Processor Gigabit Ethernet Powermac: Backups/FileServer
G4 800mhz Quicksilver Powermac: Media Center
G4 400mhz Sawtooth: Krisdee's Desktop Machine
Sony Vaio Laptop: Dev/Testing Machine

i don't think all those "deaths" are a coincidence? what are you plugging your computers in to? not a $5 powerstrip from fry's right? i bet you have a lot of line noise on the same circuit you have your computers plugged in to. even a celphone charger can create huge amounts of line noise that can wreak havoc on your electronics. i've lots countless hard drives and powersupplies because of this.

You negected to mention your EMP touch. Or more specifically your 'multi-tasking' What was it... Installing software and copying to and from the same drive? I mean really who can kill an IBM Deskstar drive in less then 24hrs?

Hope the Gigabit serves you well...
